The San Francisco Environment Department is seeking a Director of the Environment Department.  This position reports directly to the Environmental Commission and the Mayor, the Director of Environment, is responsible for the complete governance and oversight of the Environment Department. The Director empowers the department to support the City and County of San Francisco in its climate pledge, strategic action plan, and other programs and projects. The department’s success relies significantly on the contributions of others involved in these initiatives. The Director is expected to develop partnerships with other city departments, such as Parks and Recreation and the Public Utilities Commission. The Director will lead by example and push forward the department’s pledge for racial equity internally and throughout the San Francisco community. Specific job duties for this position include:


  • Development and administration of the departmental budget and long-term planning, including management of grant funding and general funds, along with budget accountability to the Board of Supervisors.
  • General oversight of the environmental programs and/or projects and ensuring timely implementation of departmental goals, policies, and strategic plans.
  • Develop strong and collegial working relationships with other departments and community groups to support the climate action plan and other strategic initiatives related to environmental affairs.
  • Oversee proposals, project implementation, and overall organizational strategy in environment and climate change matters.
  • Develop and attract talent within the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.
