San Diego County Water Authority is seeking a General Counsel. Under direction from the Board of Directors, the General Counsel is the chief legal officer of SDCWA and plans, organizes, coordinates, and controls the operations, activities and functions of the General Counsel’s Office. Additionally, the General Counsel also develops and administers a comprehensive legal services program for SDCWA’s Board and oversees the legal team including the selection of outside attorneys and the strategic approach for litigated matters. The General Counsel shall be available to respond at unscheduled hours where legal urgencies arise. As such, it will be ideal if the General Counsel is a resident of San Diego County. The ideal candidate will be an experienced legal professional with direct public agency experience gained by working in the public sector or from working in a law firm that provided extensive legal services to a public agency, preferably in the area of water law. The best candidate will have experience with water utilities, water rights, public power and alternative energy. Ideally, the candidate will have meaningful litigation experience, including the management of litigation cases. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record in managing a legal office or public agency in-house legal department and thrive working with high performance teams. Finally, the ideal candidate is a person who listens first, seeks input, and presents legal opinions for the Board’s consideration and appreciates discussion and a thorough analysis of all aspects of an issue.
