The City of Carlsbad is seeking a Building Official, this position manages and directs the programs, activities, and operations of the Building Division that include permit processing, plan check, building counter services, and building inspection functions to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, policies, and regulations. This classification assists with the most complex inspections and provides fiscal oversight for the program budget; exercises direct supervision over assigned staff; serves as a technical resource; coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Building Division and Community Development Department.

Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in architecture, engineering, or a related field and four years of experience as a plan’s examiner, including at least two years of full-time experience in a supervisory role; or
  • Equivalent to completion of at least two years of college course work majoring in building design, building inspection, construction management, architecture, engineering, or a related field and five years of experience as a building inspector, including at least two years of full-time experience supervising building inspectors; or
  • Four years or more as a full-time Building Official:
  • Current certification as a Building Official through the International Code Council is required at the time of appointment.
  • A valid California Class C driver's license or higher is required.
