The City of Garland serves homeowners and developers with a variety of services including building permits and inspections for many common improvements and is recruiting for a Building Official to lead a department responsible for directing the operation of personnel, budget, and resources for the Building Inspection Department, along with responding to questions regarding permits, building codes, inspections, and fees. This position is recognized as the principal building construction and enforcement expert in the organization and may also provide oversight for the Code Compliance Department. The Building Official will manage a department with an annual budget of $1,728,857 and 16 FTEs.
This new leader must have the technical expertise and knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of building construction and inspection; knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations as applied to building inspection; ability to read and interpret complex building plans, specifications and building codes; and ability to recommend and implement goals, objectives, and practices for providing effective and efficient building inspection and construction services.
Candidates shall have bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or a related field of study, along with 7-10 years of related experience in building inspection and enforcement and 3-5 years in a management role. Candidates must have the following certifications/licenses: American Certified Building Official and State of Texas Plumbing Inspector, and it is also preferred for candidates to have certifications/licenses as a Building Inspector, Commercial Plans Examiner and/or Code Enforcement Officer.
