The City of Grand Rapids is seeking a Chief Sustainability Officer. The Chief Sustainability Officer oversees the City’s sustainability, climate resilience, greenhouse gas reduction, and environmental justice initiatives. This role focuses on internal sustainability efforts and communitywide goals. Key duties include leading sustainability strategies with executive leadership, reporting on progress, developing strategies and training, implementing policies, building partnerships with the community, and pursuing grants. The Chief Sustainability Officer also manages the department’s budget and personnel while serving on advisory boards. The ideal candidate will possess strong collaboration and relationship-building skills, demonstrating a diplomatic approach to achieving goals. They should have extensive knowledge of sustainability, climate change, and environmental justice programs, while also being innovative and creative in problem-solving, bringing new ideas to advance the City’s sustainability program. Additionally, the candidate should excel in both oral and written communication and be comfortable speaking in public settings.
